Visit Ho Chi Minh City, also known as Saigon for just $91. It’s Vietnam’s commercial hub and is an extremely congested city. Attempt to cross the roads and be amazed by how the many motorcycles magically weave around you. A tip – walk slowly and steadily, be predictable so as to allow motorcyclists to anticipate your next move. Visit the Reunification Palace, Notre Dam and the magnificent central post office. Explore Ben Thanh Market for local shopping and food. Slurp a bowl of Pho or have Banh Xeo, a crispy Vietnamese pancake. My favourite food in Saigon would be Bun Thit Nuong Cha Gio, which is rice vermicelli noodles with grilled boneless pork, fresh lettuce and herbs. Check out my post on Hoi An’s best Vietnamese food dishes too, to see more of what Vietnamese food have to offer. From Saigon you can do day trips to Can Tho to visit its floating market, or the Cu Chi Tunnels.
Cambodia, Siem Reap $161
Siem Reap is the gateway to millennium-old Angkor Wat temple ruins, an architectural masterpiece. Angkor was the seat of the Khmer kingdom between the 9th and 5th century and the largest religious monument in the world. The magnificent complex of stone buildings, mysterious carvings and ancient temples is aweinspiring. Get up early in the morning to see the majestic sunrise at Angkor Wat, it’s an impressive sight. Remember to wear proper clothing – shorts and sarongs are not allowed for visits to some temples. Wear long pants and shirts with sleeves to be on the safe side. Other than Angkor Wat, a place of interest in Siem Reap is the Kampong Phluk Floating Village, a fascinating village on stilts. It’s an hour away from Siem Reap and a great day trip. It’s not the cheapest flight on this list, but it’s well worth – it’s still a cheap flight really!
