Singapore is a major travel hub and the abundance of budget airlines in the region means that you’ve got the option to travel Southeast Asia easily and cheaply. I used Skyscanner, which is a great tool to obtain the best prices for flights. You can do these trips over the weekend or long weekends without breaking the bank or sacrificing precious vacation leave. Disclaimer: flight prices fluctuate and this is accurate as of February 2016. There’s really so many cheap flights to be found if you look for them.

Jakarta is Bangkok’s larger, dirtier and more gangsta cousin. It’s the most populous city not just in Indonesia, but in Southeast Asia too. Main attractions of Jakarta include its exciting nightlife, parties, megamalls and shopping. Do you know that there’s 174 shopping malls in Jakarta? Your best bet would be to visit Grand Indonesia Mall, which is one of Southeast Asia’s largest shopping centres. Visit the Istiqlal Mosque, National Museum, Museum Bank Indonesia too if you’re keen on culture. If you fancy some sun and sand, make a trip to the Thousand Islands, Jakarta’s answer to clear water and white sand. A little tip, travel further to the north of the islands and visit Sepa Island for the best snorkelling. This is definitely the cheapest flight you can find out of Singapore at just $56.

See the huge limestone caves and pay a visit to the local Hindu community’s most important temple and shrine. Go museum hopping, the Islamic Arts Museum is a fantastic place to discover more about Malaysian art and culture. Also, visit the Menara Tower for panoramic views across Kuala Lumpur, including the nearby Petronas Towers. It’s a cheap flight to Kuala Lumpur and you should visit.

Go island hopping along the amazing Andaman coastline in the Krabi. The islands in this province of Thailand is home to massive limestone karsts, which is a stunning view. There’s so many islands to choose from at Krabi. Visit Ao Nang, Krabi’s most developed beach destination with a fantastic beach. Rai Leh, the rock climbing mecca of Thailand or Ton Sai, a cheap backpacker  destination away from the hordes of package tour visitors. The most famous beach destination in Krabi would be Ko Phi Phi, where The Beach was filmed. It is also home to a large Marine National Park. If all else fails, visit Ko Lanta, a sleepy island and an escape for those who find the other destinations too touristy. This is definately the cheapest flight you can get to Thailand, you could extend your stay if you’ve the time and take a bus to Bangkok from Krabi, it’s cheaper this way.

Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City $91cheap flights singapore ho chi minh saigon

Visit Ho Chi Minh City, also known as Saigon for just $91. It’s Vietnam’s commercial hub and is an extremely congested city. Attempt to cross the roads and be amazed by how the many motorcycles magically weave around you. A tip – walk slowly and steadily, be predictable so as to allow motorcyclists to anticipate your next move. Visit the Reunification Palace, Notre Dam and the magnificent central post office. Explore Ben Thanh Market for local shopping and food. Slurp a bowl of Pho or have Banh Xeo, a crispy Vietnamese pancake. My favourite food in Saigon would be Bun Thit Nuong Cha Gio, which is rice vermicelli noodles with grilled boneless pork, fresh lettuce and herbs. Check out my post on Hoi An’s best Vietnamese food dishes too, to see more of what Vietnamese food have to offer. From Saigon you can do day trips to Can Tho to visit its floating market, or the Cu Chi Tunnels.

Cambodia, Siem Reap $161

cheapest flights siem reap angkor wat

Siem Reap is the gateway to millennium-old Angkor Wat temple ruins, an architectural masterpiece. Angkor was the seat of the Khmer kingdom between the 9th and 5th century and the largest religious monument in the world. The magnificent complex of stone buildings, mysterious carvings and ancient temples is aweinspiring. Get up early in the morning to see the majestic sunrise at Angkor Wat, it’s an impressive sight. Remember to wear proper clothing – shorts and sarongs are not allowed for visits to some temples. Wear long pants and shirts with sleeves to be on the safe side. Other than Angkor Wat, a place of interest in Siem Reap is the Kampong Phluk Floating Village, a fascinating village on stilts. It’s an hour away from Siem Reap and a great day trip. It’s not the cheapest flight on this list, but it’s well worth – it’s still a cheap flight really!

So there’s 5 affordable destinations you can fly to from Singapore with budget airlines. With this list of the cheapest flights you can find around Asia, there’s no excuse to not travel this year. I’ve been to 4 of these 5 destinations when I was a penniless student. They’re definately worth going to if you’ve not got the funds to do more expensive holidays.
